Los Cristianos, a real tonic for all nationalities

The Swedish were the first tourists to discover the healthy boost that the sun and sea of Los Cristianos could offer, that was over 50 years ago, but it was a secret to good to keep and the fishing village has grown proudly as it has gained more admirers.

One of the main shopping roads, Avenida de Suecia, is a reminder of those early visitors but there are lots of historic keys to the past in this popular resort.

The port was home to the local fishing trade but is now equally important as a busy ferry station for the other 6 Canary Islands. To the east of the port is the old town with its narrow streets and the church plaza, still a centre for music and dancing during the many fiestas that light up the town.

Los Cristianos is one of the biggest tourist centres in Tenerife

To the west, linked by a short tunnel, is the vast golden spread of Las Vistas beach, the place to be for safe bathing, sport and soaking up the sun. A pedestrian promenade runs the length of the beach and on to Playa de Las Americas, but there are many bars and restaurants to tempt you to interrupt your walk along the way.

Looking up from the beach, the volcanic cone of Montaña Chayofita is a reminder of the origins of Tenerife, and in the distance Mount Teide can often be seen capped with snow.

Los Cristianos has embraced tourism and encouraged re-located ex pats to integrate, it’s very much a working town with many thriving shops and offices, but you will find that everyone likes to take time out to put the world to rights over a coffee. Several of the main Tenerife schools are close to the town centre and it is the main bus interchange, but even in that busier setting, a glance skywards to the cropped top of Roque del Conde, will remind you that Tenerife is an island where natural beauty is never far away.
